Tomi Ungerer grew up in Strasbourg, and led an idyllic childhood until the arrival of the Nazis in They renamed him Hans, forced him into the Hitler Youth, and for the next five years his life was consumed by Nazi doctrine. Tomi Ungerer's memoir is informative concerning the Nazi occupation, and his ability to paint a vivid picture of Alsace, gives the reader a wonderful introduction to this unique area. His pictoral display, which ranges from his own childhood artwork to advertisements and newspaper clippings, brings that period of history to life.
Tomi Ungerer grew up in Strasbourg, and led an idyllic childhood until the arrival of the Nazis in They renamed him Hans, forced him into the Hitler Youth, and for the next five years his life was consumed by Nazi doctrine. Tomi was born and grew up in Alsace, France. His father died when he was just three years old leaving his mother and three older siblings to raise him. At the age of eight years old, the Nazi army occupied Alsace for the duration of the Second World War and thus Tomi changed nationality twice as a child. During the war he learned to speak German fluently as well as English and so ended up becoming perfectly trilingual. Tomi Ungerer was a child during world war 2 and he describes how the war was seen through the eyes of the highly sensitive and intelligent child he was. The photos, the documentation and his own childhood drawings of the war gives us knowledge of how it was to be living in Alsace during the war. I highly recommend this book.
